Why this year matters

If you only sit one full SSC CHSL paper this month, make it 2024. It is the closest match to what the next cycle will feel like. Speed with accuracy is the game. Tag silly misses ruthlessly; they repeat on SSC papers.

Count attempts and accuracy by section. A high raw score with a failed sectional cut-off is still a fail in the real exam.

Paper analysis

Snapshot of SSC CHSL 2024

Modern CHSL template for LDC/JSA-style aptitude speed.

As the newest SSC CHSL paper on this hub, 2024 is your primary difficulty benchmark. Score it cold, then rebuild confidence with a slightly older year rather than jumping into random mocks.

What this paper stresses

  • GA current + static mix that coaching dumps mis-weight.
  • Quant silly misses at high attempt rates.
  • Shift normalisation anxiety that wrecks accuracy.
  • English error patterns that repeat every year.

What to extract before you move on

  • GA static lists that actually appeared (not the 200-page PDF).
  • Quant chapters producing silly misses.
  • English error rules worth a one-page sheet.
  • Attempt-rate targets per section under current negatives.

How 2024 sits next to other years

After you log 2024, move to SSC CHSL 2023, SSC CHSL 2022, SSC CHSL 2021 to see which weaknesses were paper-specific versus systemic.

Analyst note: The conducting body did not publish the SSC CHSL 2024 paper. The mock below is original practice in the reported pattern; treat coaching “memory-based” papers as unofficial reconstructions.

SSC CHSL 2024 Tier-I mock paper (modelled on candidate reports)

This is a mock paper we wrote. The official 2024 paper was never released. The conducting body has not published it. These 20 questions are original, written by previousyearquestions.app to match what candidates and exam analyses reported about the 2024 exam: section mix, topics and difficulty. Use it to practise the pattern. The questions themselves are not from the real exam.

SSC has not published any CHSL question paper since the exam moved online: the question paper and answer key are shown only inside each candidate's login for a few days, for personal use, and the 'Previous Year Question Paper' page on ssc.gov.in holds only a 2011 generic CHSL model paper. This original mini-paper follows candidate reports of the CHSL 2024 Tier-I computer-based exam held from 1 to 11 July 2024.

What candidates reported about 2024

  • Tier-I was held from 1 to 11 July 2024, four shifts a day, for about 3,712 LDC/JSA and DEO vacancies; pattern unchanged at 100 questions, 60 minutes, +2 / −0.50.
  • Most analyses called the paper easy to moderate, with roughly 74–83 good attempts; English and Reasoning were the scoring sections.
  • Quantitative Aptitude was described as time-consuming and, in some shifts, moderate to difficult.
  • Reasoning carried a noticeable puzzle/arrangement block (about 4–7 questions) plus coding-decoding, mirror images, Venn diagrams, blood relations, calendar, series and cutting and folding.
  • English had about 5 comprehension questions, 3–4 grammar items and 2–3 each of cloze, synonyms/antonyms, idioms and error detection, with a spelling and an active/passive question.
  • General Awareness, with about 16–20 good attempts, mixed static GK with current affairs from the preceding months and was rated relatively challenging in some shifts.

Suggested time: 12 minutes. The real Tier-I paper had 100 questions (25 per section) for 200 marks in 60 minutes, computer-based, +2 for each correct answer and −0.50 for each wrong answer. For this 20-question mock allow 12 minutes in total and use the same marking (maximum 40 marks).

Reading comprehension

Every summer, Kamla Devi of a village near Barmer set aside a handful of the best millet seeds from her harvest and stored them in clay pots sealed with mud. Her neighbours had long since switched to packets of hybrid seed bought in town, which gave larger yields in good years but often failed when the rains were late.

Then came three dry years in a row. The hybrid crop was ruined across the area, while Kamla's old variety, though its grains were smaller, survived. Farmers began coming to her door to borrow seed, promising to return twice the quantity after harvest. What began as a favour to neighbours is now a seed bank shared by eleven villages, with its records kept in a school notebook.

  1. Why did the neighbours' hybrid crop fail?

    1. The soil was poor
    2. The rains were late for three years in a row
    3. Pests attacked the fields
    4. The seeds were stored badly
    Answer and explanation

Answer: B (The rains were late for three years in a row)

The passage says hybrid seed 'often failed when the rains were late' and that it was ruined during 'three dry years in a row'.

  2. Select the word closest in meaning to 'ruined' as used in the passage.

    1. Destroyed
    2. Improved
    3. Delayed
    4. Watered
    Answer and explanation

    Answer: A (Destroyed)

The dry years 'ruined' the hybrid crop, i.e. destroyed it, while Kamla's variety survived.

  1. The following sentence has been divided into parts. One of them may contain an error. Select the part that contains the error. The number of candidates / who appeared for the exam / were higher than last year / No error

    1. The number of candidates
    2. who appeared for the exam
    3. were higher than last year
    4. No error
    Answer and explanation

Answer: C (were higher than last year)

'The number of' takes a singular verb, so 'were higher' should be 'was higher'. (Compare 'A number of candidates were ...', which is plural.)

  2. Select the most appropriate meaning of the idiom: To beat around the bush

    1. To search for something carefully
    2. To work very hard
    3. To defeat an opponent easily
    4. To avoid coming to the main point
    Answer and explanation

Answer: D (To avoid coming to the main point)

To beat around the bush is to talk indirectly and avoid the main point.

  3. Select the most appropriate synonym of the word: Lucid

    1. Clear
    2. Confusing
    3. Lazy
    4. Heavy
    Answer and explanation

    Answer: A (Clear)

Lucid means expressed clearly and easy to understand, so 'clear' is the synonym; 'confusing' is its opposite.

General Intelligence

  1. Five friends P, Q, R, S and T sit in a row facing North. R sits in the middle. P sits at the extreme left end. T sits immediately to the right of R. Q is not an immediate neighbour of P. Who sits second from the left end?

    1. S
    2. Q
    3. T
    4. R
    Answer and explanation

    Answer: A (S)

    Positions from the left: P = 1, R = 3, T = 4. Q and S take positions 2 and 5. Q cannot be next to P, so Q = 5 and S = 2.

  2. Among A, B, C, D and E, A is taller than B but shorter than C. D is the tallest. E is shorter than B. Who is the shortest?

    1. A
    2. B
    3. E
    4. C
    Answer and explanation

    Answer: C (E)

    From the clues: D > C > A > B > E. So E is the shortest.

  3. In which of the following groups does one class contain both of the other two classes, while those two classes have nothing in common?

    1. Teachers, Men, Graduates
    2. Fruits, Apples, Mangoes
    3. Metals, Iron, Wood
    4. Birds, Parrots, Swimmers
    Answer and explanation

    Answer: B (Fruits, Apples, Mangoes)

Apples and mangoes are both fruits and no apple is a mango. In A the three classes overlap, in C wood is not a metal, and in D some birds swim while swimmers are not all birds.

  4. In a certain code language, 'sky is blue' is written as 'la ri po' and 'blue pen is' is written as 'ri ka la'. What is the code for 'sky'?

    1. la
    2. ri
    3. po
    4. ka
    Answer and explanation

    Answer: C (po)

'is' and 'blue' occur in both sentences, as do the codes 'la' and 'ri'. So 'sky' = the remaining code of the first sentence, 'po' (and 'pen' = 'ka').

  5. Select the term that comes next in the series: AZ, CX, EV, GT, ?

    1. HS
    2. IS
    3. JR
    4. IR
    Answer and explanation

    Answer: D (IR)

    The first letters move +2 (A, C, E, G, I) and the second letters move −2 (Z, X, V, T, R), giving IR.

Quantitative Aptitude

  1. A's salary is 25% more than B's salary. By what percentage is B's salary less than A's?

    1. 25%
    2. 20%
    3. 15%
    4. 22.5%
    Answer and explanation

    Answer: B (20%)

    Let B = 100, so A = 125. B is less than A by 25, and 25 ÷ 125 × 100 = 20%.

  2. What is the value of (1 − sin²θ)(1 + tan²θ)?

    1. sin²θ
    2. tan²θ
    3. 1
    4. 0
    Answer and explanation

    Answer: C (1)

    1 − sin²θ = cos²θ and 1 + tan²θ = sec²θ. Their product is cos²θ × sec²θ = 1.

  3. The average of five numbers is 42. When one number is removed, the average of the remaining four numbers becomes 40. What is the number removed?

    1. 48
    2. 50
    3. 52
    4. 46
    Answer and explanation

    Answer: B (50)

    Sum of five = 5 × 42 = 210. Sum of four = 4 × 40 = 160. Removed number = 210 − 160 = 50.

  4. What is the volume of a sphere of radius 21 cm? (Take π = 22/7)

    1. 38,808 cm³
    2. 36,808 cm³
    3. 38,088 cm³
    4. 19,404 cm³
    Answer and explanation

    Answer: A (38,808 cm³)

    Volume = 4/3 × π × r³ = 4/3 × 22/7 × 21 × 21 × 21 = 4 × 22 × 21 × 21 = 38,808 cm³.

  5. A can finish a piece of work in 20 days and B in 30 days. They work together for 6 days, after which A leaves. In how many more days will B finish the remaining work?

    1. 12 days
    2. 18 days
    3. 10 days
    4. 15 days
    Answer and explanation

    Answer: D (15 days)

    Together they do 1/20 + 1/30 = 5/60 = 1/12 of the work per day. In 6 days they finish 6/12 = 1/2. B alone does 1/30 per day, so the remaining 1/2 takes (1/2) ÷ (1/30) = 15 days.
