PYQ full form
PYQ = Previous Year Question(s). Indian students, teachers and coaching institutes use the term for questions from past papers of board exams and competitive exams. “Solve the PYQs” means practising the real questions the conducting body has already set, not questions written by a coaching institute.
The term works at three levels:
- A single PYQ: one question from a past paper (“this PYQ on Ohm’s law came in 2023”).
- PYQs: a collection of past questions, often sorted by year or by chapter.
- A PYQ paper: the full question paper from one past sitting, such as the JEE Main 2025 paper or the CBSE Class 10 2025 paper.
PYQ meaning in exams
In exam preparation, a PYQ is only as useful as its source. There are two kinds:
- Official PYQs are published by the conducting body together with the answer key. CBSE, NTA (JEE Main, NEET, CUET), UPSC (CSE, NDA, CDS), SSC and the GATE organising institute all publish papers or response sheets.
- Memory-based PYQs are reconstructed by candidates and coaching institutes right after the exam, when no official paper is released. This is common for bank exams such as IBPS and SBI, and for some CAT and SNAP slots.
Treat memory-based questions as close approximations. Where the official key and a memory-based solution disagree, the official key wins. The memory-based vs official papers guide explains how to reconcile the two.
Short forms used with PYQ
| Short form | Stands for | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| PYQ | Previous Year Question | One question from an earlier exam |
| PYQs | Previous Year Questions | A set of past questions, by year or by topic |
| PYQP | Previous Year Question Paper | The complete paper from one sitting |
| PYP | Previous Year Paper | Same as PYQP; common in JEE, GATE and CAT circles |
| Topic-wise PYQs | Previous year questions grouped by chapter | Same questions, regrouped by syllabus unit instead of year |
| Chapter-wise PYQs | Previous year questions per chapter | The board and JEE/NEET name for topic-wise PYQs |
| Solved PYQs | PYQs with solutions | Worked answers, ideally with reasons the wrong options fail |
| Memory-based PYQs | Questions recalled by candidates | Used when the exam body does not release the paper |
| PYQ analysis | Previous year question analysis | Breaking papers down by topic, weightage and difficulty |
PYQ vs mock test vs sample paper
| PYQ | Mock test | Sample paper | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who sets it | The conducting body, in a real exam | Coaching institutes and test platforms | Usually the board (for example CBSE SQP) |
| What it shows | The true pattern, difficulty and weightage | Exam-like practice at volume | The pattern planned for the coming exam |
| Best used for | Diagnosis, weightage maps, final revision | Speed, stamina and new variations | Spotting pattern changes this year |
| Limitation | Fixed number of papers; may include deleted syllabus | Difficulty can be off from the real exam | Not a real exam paper |
The best results come from using all three: PYQs to learn what the examiner asks, mocks for volume, and sample papers for any pattern change. See mocks vs previous year papers for how to split your time.
Why PYQs matter
- They show what the examiner actually asks. The syllabus lists everything that could come up. PYQs show what does come up, and how often.
- Topics repeat. In large syllabi (UPSC GS, NEET Biology, GATE core subjects), the same concepts come back year after year with small changes.
- They calibrate difficulty. A coaching mock can be harder or easier than the real exam. A PYQ is the real benchmark.
- They train exam behaviour. Full timed papers teach question selection, time per section and when to skip, which reading notes cannot.
How to use PYQs (in 5 steps)
- Start with the newest paper, timed. It shows you where you stand, so don’t worry about the score.
- Review the same day. Log every miss as concept, silly, time or guess in an error log (how to analyse a PYQ paper).
- Work backwards through 4–5 more years under exam timing.
- Switch to topic-wise PYQs only for the chapters your log flags. See topic-wise vs year-wise PYQs and our chapter-wise pages for JEE Main, NEET, GATE CS, UPSC Prelims and CBSE Class 10.
- Re-sit one paper in the final weeks to check that the repairs held.

How many years of PYQs to solve
| Exam | Baseline | Go further when |
|---|---|---|
| CBSE Class 10 / 12 | Last 5 board papers plus this year’s sample paper | You want chapter-wise repeat patterns |
| JEE Main / NEET | Last 5 years (all shifts you can manage) | You need chapter weightage maps |
| UPSC Prelims | Last 10 years of GS | You are mining static themes |
| SSC / bank exams | Last 3–5 years, several shifts each | Speed is stable and you need variety |
| GATE / CAT | Last 5–10 years of your paper or slots | The pattern has not changed |

Which PYQ is best for Class 10?
For CBSE Class 10, the best PYQs are the official CBSE board papers from the last five years, solved with the official marking scheme. The marking scheme shows where step marks are awarded, which matters as much as the final answer in Maths and Science. Add the current year’s CBSE sample paper, since it reflects any change in pattern or competency-based questions. Start at the CBSE Class 10 PYQ hub, or Class 12 if you are a senior student.
Frequently asked questions
What is the full form of PYQ?
PYQ stands for Previous Year Questions (or Previous Year Question in the singular). PYQs is the plural. A full paper from an earlier sitting is called a PYQ paper, PYQP, or PYP (previous year paper).
What does PYQ mean in exams?
In exams, a PYQ is a question that was actually asked in an earlier sitting of the same exam, such as a CBSE board paper, JEE Main shift, NEET, UPSC Prelims, SSC CGL or GATE. Students solve PYQs to learn the real pattern, difficulty, and topic weightage.
What is PYQ in CBSE?
In CBSE, PYQs are questions from previous board exam papers for Class 10 and Class 12. CBSE publishes previous year question papers and marking schemes on cbse.gov.in, and solving them with the marking scheme shows how step marks are awarded. Our Class 10 and Class 12 hubs organise them year by year.
Which PYQ is best for Class 10?
The best Class 10 PYQs are the official CBSE board papers from the last 5 years, solved with CBSE’s own marking scheme. Add CBSE sample papers for the current year because they reflect the latest pattern changes.
Are PYQs enough to crack an exam?
PYQs alone are rarely enough, but they are the most reliable starting point. Use them to find high-weightage topics and the exam’s question style, then fill gaps with concept study and mock tests.
How many years of PYQs should I solve?
For most exams, solve the last 5 years under timed conditions, then go back 8 to 10 years for topic-weightage analysis when the syllabus has stayed stable.
What is the difference between PYQs and mock tests?
PYQs are real questions set by the conducting body in past exams. Mock tests are practice papers made by coaching institutes to imitate the exam. PYQs show the true pattern; mocks add volume and newer question variations.
Where can I find PYQs for free?
Conducting bodies such as CBSE, NTA, UPSC, SSC and the IITs publish many papers officially. previousyearquestions.app organises free year-wise PYQ pages for 30 exams with links to official papers and answer keys where they are available.
