Why this year matters

SSC CHSL 2022 is where weightage maps start to get honest. Themes that survive three to five years are usually worth deliberate revision. Speed with accuracy is the game. Tag silly misses ruthlessly; they repeat on SSC papers.

Count attempts and accuracy by section. A high raw score with a failed sectional cut-off is still a fail in the real exam.

Paper analysis

Snapshot of SSC CHSL 2022

Good second full-length.

2022 is a mid-decade stress test. Difficulty spikes here usually come from topic mix and selection pressure, not from obsolete exam software.

What this paper stresses

  • Shift normalisation anxiety that wrecks accuracy.
  • English error patterns that repeat every year.
  • GA current + static mix that coaching dumps mis-weight.
  • Quant silly misses at high attempt rates.

What to extract before you move on

  • English error rules worth a one-page sheet.
  • Attempt-rate targets per section under current negatives.
  • GA static lists that actually appeared (not the 200-page PDF).
  • Quant chapters producing silly misses.

How 2022 sits next to other years

Compare 2022 with SSC CHSL 2024, SSC CHSL 2023, SSC CHSL 2021. Themes that repeat across this band deserve deliberate notes; one-off oddities do not.

Analyst note: The conducting body did not publish the SSC CHSL 2022 paper. The mock below is original practice in the reported pattern; treat coaching “memory-based” papers as unofficial reconstructions.

SSC CHSL 2022 Tier-I mock paper (modelled on candidate reports)

This is a mock paper we wrote. The official 2022 paper was never released. The conducting body has not published it. These 20 questions are original, written by previousyearquestions.app to match what candidates and exam analyses reported about the 2022 exam: section mix, topics and difficulty. Use it to practise the pattern. The questions themselves are not from the real exam.

SSC has not published any CHSL question paper since the exam moved online: the question paper and answer key are shown only inside each candidate's login for a few days, for personal use, and the 'Previous Year Question Paper' page on ssc.gov.in holds only a 2011 generic CHSL model paper. This original mini-paper follows candidate reports of the CHSL 2022 Tier-I computer-based exam held from 9 to 21 March 2023.

What candidates reported about 2022

  • Tier-I was held from 9 to 21 March 2023: 100 questions in 60 minutes, 25 per section, +2 / −0.50.
  • Candidates rated the paper easy to moderate overall, with about 69–72 good attempts on the first day; Quantitative Aptitude was called the hardest section.
  • English carried both a 5-question reading comprehension and a 5-question cloze test, plus para-jumbles, one-word substitutions and idioms (about 3 each).
  • Quant was geometry-heavy: mensuration and circles (about 3 each), trigonometry, number system, simplification, profit and loss, and algebra.
  • Reasoning had a calendar question, mathematical operations, analogy, odd-one-out, coding-decoding and direction sense, plus several figure-based items.
  • General Awareness had about 7–8 current-affairs questions from 2022 (FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Global Hunger Index) along with constitutional articles, culture and a medieval-history question.

Suggested time: 12 minutes. The real Tier-I paper had 100 questions (25 per section) for 200 marks in 60 minutes, computer-based, +2 for each correct answer and −0.50 for each wrong answer. For this 20-question mock allow 12 minutes in total and use the same marking (maximum 40 marks).

Reading comprehension

In the hill town of Pauri, the municipal bus that had carried schoolchildren for twenty years was finally declared unfit for the road. Instead of selling it for scrap, a group of retired teachers asked the council to hand it over to them. They removed the seats, fixed wooden shelves along both sides and filled them with books collected from households across the district.

The 'library bus' now stands near the market on weekdays and moves to a different village every Sunday. Children may borrow two books at a time, and adults who cannot read are offered evening lessons inside the bus. The teachers say the hardest part was not raising money but persuading parents that reading for pleasure is not a waste of study time. Within a year, membership had grown from forty to nearly six hundred.

  1. What did the retired teachers do with the old bus?

    1. Sold it to buy books
    2. Repaired it to carry schoolchildren again
    3. Converted it into a library
    4. Returned it to the council
    Answer and explanation

Answer: C (Converted it into a library)

    Answer and explanation

Answer: B (Convincing parents that reading for pleasure is worthwhile)

The passage says the hardest part was 'not raising money but persuading parents that reading for pleasure is not a waste of study time'.

  3. Select the most appropriate antonym of the word 'unfit' as used in the passage.

    1. Suitable
    2. Damaged
    3. Unsafe
    4. Worn
    Answer and explanation

    Answer: A (Suitable)

'Unfit for the road' means not suitable for use; the opposite is 'suitable'. The other options are close to 'unfit' in meaning.

  1. Select the most appropriate meaning of the idiom: A blessing in disguise

    1. A hidden enemy
    2. A secret gift from a friend
    3. A pretence of kindness

    1. Entomology
    2. Ornithology
    3. Herpetology
    4. Ichthyology
    Answer and explanation

General Intelligence

  1. If 1 January 2023 was a Sunday, what day of the week was 1 March 2023?

    1. Tuesday
    2. Wednesday
    3. Thursday
    4. Monday
    Answer and explanation

    Answer: B (Wednesday)

    From 1 January to 1 March 2023 there are 31 (January) + 28 (February, not a leap year) = 59 days. 59 = 8 × 7 + 3, so the day moves 3 places forward: Sunday → Wednesday.

  2. If '+' means '×', '−' means '+', '×' means '÷' and '÷' means '−', what is the value of 8 + 3 − 12 × 4 ÷ 5?

    1. 18
    2. 20
    3. 24
    4. 22
    Answer and explanation

    Answer: D (22)

    After replacing the signs: 8 × 3 + 12 ÷ 4 − 5 = 24 + 3 − 5 = 22.

  3. Select the option that is related to the third word in the same way as the second word is related to the first. Doctor : Hospital :: Teacher : ?

    1. School
    2. Book
    3. Student
    4. Lesson
    Answer and explanation

    Answer: A (School)

A doctor works in a hospital; a teacher works in a school (person : workplace).

  4. In a certain code, MANGO is written as 13-1-14-7-15. How will GRAPE be written in that code?

    1. 7-17-1-16-5
    2. 8-18-1-16-5
    3. 7-18-1-16-5
    4. 7-18-1-15-5
    Answer and explanation

    Answer: C (7-18-1-16-5)

    Each letter is replaced by its position in the alphabet (M = 13, A = 1, N = 14, G = 7, O = 15). G = 7, R = 18, A = 1, P = 16, E = 5, giving 7-18-1-16-5.

  5. Select the letter that comes next in the series: B, E, I, N, ?

    1. S
    2. T
    3. U
    4. R
    Answer and explanation

    Answer: B (T)

    The gaps increase by one: B(+3)E(+4)I(+5)N(+6)T. N is the 14th letter, so 14 + 6 = 20 = T.

Quantitative Aptitude

  1. A chord of length 16 cm is drawn in a circle of radius 10 cm. What is the distance of the chord from the centre?

    1. 6 cm
    2. 8 cm
    3. 4 cm
    4. 5 cm
    Answer and explanation

    Answer: A (6 cm)

    The perpendicular from the centre bisects the chord, giving half-chord 8 cm. Distance = √(10² − 8²) = √(100 − 64) = √36 = 6 cm.

  2. If tan θ = 3/4 and θ is acute, what is the value of sin θ + cos θ?

    1. 1
    2. 5/7
    3. 7/5
    4. 12/25
    Answer and explanation

    Answer: C (7/5)

    With opposite 3 and adjacent 4, the hypotenuse is 5. sin θ = 3/5, cos θ = 4/5, so the sum is 7/5.

  3. The volume of a cube is 343 cm³. What is its total surface area?

    1. 196 cm²
    2. 294 cm²
    3. 245 cm²
    4. 343 cm²
    Answer and explanation

    Answer: B (294 cm²)

    Edge = ∛343 = 7 cm. Total surface area = 6 × 7² = 6 × 49 = 294 cm².

  4. What is the smallest number that must be added to 1000 so that the sum is exactly divisible by 23?

    1. 10
    2. 11
    3. 13
    4. 12
    Answer and explanation

    Answer: D (12)

    23 × 43 = 989, so 1000 leaves remainder 1000 − 989 = 11. Adding 23 − 11 = 12 gives 1012 = 23 × 44.

  5. By selling an article for ₹1,380 a shopkeeper loses 8%. At what price should he sell it to gain 12%?

    1. ₹1,650
    2. ₹1,680
    3. ₹1,700
    4. ₹1,620
    Answer and explanation

    Answer: B (₹1,680)

    Selling price at 8% loss = 0.92 × CP = 1380, so CP = ₹1,500. For a 12% gain, SP = 1.12 × 1500 = ₹1,680.
