Why this year matters
2017 will not mirror every new question type, but it still trains selection, stamina, and the chapters that keep coming back. Biology volume dominates timing. Log Physics and Chemistry misses separately so repair sessions stay focused.
Write down one selection rule you will reuse on exam day: what you attempt first, and what you abandon after a fixed time box.
Paper analysis
Snapshot of NEET 2017
Archive NEET.
2017 may feel differently paced than the newest cycle. Borrow stamina and theme lessons; do not copy obsolete section orders or marking quirks.
What this paper stresses
- Chemistry accuracy under Bio fatigue.
- NCERT-line questions you overcomplicated.
- Negative marking on guessed Physics.
- Biology factual volume versus Physics numerical time.
What to extract before you move on
- Physics formula-slip vs concept misses.
- Chem organic/physical pockets that need a dedicated repair block.
- A timing split you will actually follow (Bio vs PCB balance).
- Bio chapters with factual bleed (you “knew” it yesterday).
How 2017 sits next to other years
Use 2017 only after NEET 2025, NEET 2024, NEET 2023 are logged. Archive years are for frequency maps, not for predicting tomorrow’s cut-off.
Analyst note: The conducting body did not publish the NEET 2017 paper. The mock below is original practice in the reported pattern; treat coaching “memory-based” papers as unofficial reconstructions.
NEET 2017 mock paper (modelled on the CBSE pattern)
CBSE did not publish the NEET 2017 question booklets on an official website that we could find, so this is an original mock paper. It follows the 7 May 2017 exam format: 180 single-correct MCQs in Physics, Chemistry and Biology, 3 hours, +4/−1.
What candidates reported about 2017
- Held on 7 May 2017, conducted by CBSE.
- About 11.39 lakh candidates registered.
- From 2017 the paper was also offered in regional languages (Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali, Assamese, Gujarati and others) besides English and Hindi.
- Pattern: 180 MCQs (45 Physics, 45 Chemistry, 90 Biology), 180 minutes, 720 marks, +4/−1.
Suggested time: 24 minutes. Practice mini-paper in the real exam's format: single-correct MCQs with four options. Marking as in the real exam: +4 for a correct answer, −1 for a wrong answer, 0 if unanswered. Allow about one minute per question.
Physics
A uniform wire of resistance R is stretched to twice its original length, its volume remaining constant. Its new resistance is
- 4R
- R/2
- 2R
- R/4
Answer and explanation
Answer: A (4R)
R = ρl/A and volume lA is constant, so A halves when l doubles. R′ = ρ(2l)/(A/2) = 4R.
A planet has 8 times the mass and 2 times the radius of the Earth. If the escape velocity on Earth is 11.2 km/s, on the planet it is
- 11.2 km/s
- 22.4 km/s
- 5.6 km/s
- 44.8 km/s
Answer and explanation
Answer: B (22.4 km/s)
vₑ = √(2GM/R) ∝ √(M/R) = √(8/2) = 2. So vₑ = 2 × 11.2 = 22.4 km/s.
The de Broglie wavelength of an electron accelerated from rest through a potential difference of 100 V is about
- 1.23 nm
- 0.0123 nm
- 0.123 nm
- 12.3 nm
Answer and explanation
Answer: C (0.123 nm)
λ = h/√(2meV) = 6.626 × 10⁻³⁴ / √(2 × 9.11 × 10⁻³¹ × 1.6 × 10⁻¹⁹ × 100) ≈ 1.23 × 10⁻¹⁰ m = 0.123 nm (equivalently 12.27/√V Å).
An object is placed 30 cm in front of a convex lens of focal length 20 cm. The image is
- virtual, 60 cm in front of the lens, magnification +2
- real, 60 cm behind the lens, magnification −2
- real, 12 cm behind the lens, magnification −0.4
- real, 60 cm behind the lens, magnification −0.5
Answer and explanation
Answer: B (real, 60 cm behind the lens, magnification −2)
1/v − 1/u = 1/f with u = −30, f = +20: 1/v = 1/20 − 1/30 = 1/60, so v = +60 cm (real). m = v/u = 60/(−30) = −2 (inverted, twice the size).
A radioactive isotope has a half-life of 5 days. The fraction of a sample remaining after 15 days is
- 1/6
- 1/16
- 1/3
- 1/8
Answer and explanation
Answer: D (1/8)
15 days = 3 half-lives, so N/N₀ = (1/2)³ = 1/8.
A pipe closed at one end is 33 cm long. If the speed of sound is 330 m/s, its fundamental frequency is (ignore end correction)
- 500 Hz
- 250 Hz
- 1000 Hz
- 125 Hz
Answer and explanation
Answer: B (250 Hz)
Closed pipe fundamental: f = v/4L = 330/(4 × 0.33) = 250 Hz.
Chemistry
The bond order of the superoxide ion O₂⁻ is
- 2.5
- 1
- 1.5
- 2
Answer and explanation
Answer: C (1.5)
O₂ has bond order (10 − 6)/2 = 2. Adding one electron to an antibonding π* orbital gives (10 − 7)/2 = 1.5.
9.8 g of H₂SO₄ (molar mass 98 g/mol) is dissolved in 500 g of water. The molality of the solution is
- 0.2 m
- 0.02 m
- 0.1 m
- 0.5 m
Answer and explanation
Answer: A (0.2 m)
Moles = 9.8/98 = 0.1 mol. Molality = 0.1 mol / 0.5 kg = 0.2 mol/kg.
Which of the following alkenes shows geometrical (cis–trans) isomerism?
- But-2-ene
- Propene
- 2-Methylpropene
- But-1-ene
Answer and explanation
Answer: A (But-2-ene)
Each doubly bonded carbon must carry two different groups. In but-2-ene, CH₃CH=CHCH₃, each carbon has H and CH₃, so cis and trans forms exist; the others have two identical groups on one carbon.
Zirconium and hafnium have almost identical atomic radii. This is mainly due to
- diagonal relationship
- inert pair effect
- lanthanoid contraction
- actinoid contraction
Answer and explanation
Answer: C (lanthanoid contraction)
The poorly shielding 4f electrons filled between La and Hf cause the lanthanoid contraction, which cancels the expected size increase from period 5 to period 6.
For N₂(g) + 3H₂(g) → 2NH₃(g) at 300 K, the value of ΔH − ΔU is about (R = 8.314 J mol⁻¹ K⁻¹)
- −4.99 kJ
- −2.49 kJ
- +4.99 kJ
- zero
Answer and explanation
Answer: A (−4.99 kJ)
ΔH − ΔU = Δn(g)RT. Δn(g) = 2 − 4 = −2, so ΔH − ΔU = −2 × 8.314 × 300 J ≈ −4988 J ≈ −4.99 kJ.
Which of the following gives a silver mirror with Tollens' reagent?
- Propanone
- Ethanol
- Ethanal
- Ethanoic acid
Answer and explanation
Answer: C (Ethanal)
Tollens' reagent oxidises aldehydes; ethanal (CH₃CHO) reduces Ag⁺ to metallic silver. Ketones, alcohols and carboxylic acids (except formic acid) do not.
Biology (Botany and Zoology)
In the real paper Biology carries 90 of the 180 questions, split roughly equally between Botany and Zoology.
Botany
Casparian strips are found in the
- epidermis
- pericycle
- cortex
- endodermis
Answer and explanation
Answer: D (endodermis)
The radial and inner tangential walls of endodermal cells carry suberin bands (Casparian strips) that block apoplastic water movement into the stele.
How many meiotic divisions are needed to produce 100 seeds in an angiosperm?
- 100
- 200
- 125
- 150
Answer and explanation
Answer: C (125)
Each seed needs one egg (1 megaspore mother cell meiosis gives 1 functional megaspore) and one pollen grain (1 meiosis gives 4 pollen grains). 100 seeds: 100 + 100/4 = 125 meioses.
Okazaki fragments are formed during DNA replication on the
- template strand only, during transcription
- leading strand, synthesised continuously
- RNA primer itself
- lagging strand, synthesised discontinuously
Answer and explanation
Answer: D (lagging strand, synthesised discontinuously)
DNA polymerase works only 5′→3′, so the strand whose template runs 5′→3′ towards the fork is made in short pieces (Okazaki fragments) later joined by DNA ligase.
Which plant hormone causes stomatal closure during water stress?
- Abscisic acid
- Gibberellin
- Cytokinin
- Auxin
Answer and explanation
Answer: A (Abscisic acid)
ABA, the stress hormone, accumulates in guard cells under water stress and causes stomata to close.

In humans, fertilisation normally occurs in the
- isthmus of the fallopian tube
- ampullary region of the fallopian tube
- uterus
- cervix
Answer and explanation
Answer: B (ampullary region of the fallopian tube)
The ovum is fertilised in the ampullary region (ampullary–isthmic junction) of the oviduct, after which the zygote moves towards the uterus.
The wings of a butterfly and the wings of a bird are an example of
- vestigial organs
- analogous organs and convergent evolution
- homologous organs and divergent evolution
- atavism
Answer and explanation
Answer: B (analogous organs and convergent evolution)
They do the same job but have different structure and origin (analogous), produced by convergent evolution.
The Widal test is used to diagnose

How to sit NEET 2017
- Work through the mock paper above under exam timing. It follows the reported pattern, but the questions are our own.
- Sit the paper under current brochure rules (timers, negatives, NAT/MSQ norms), even if 2017’s interface looked different.
- When the clock ends, stop. Review should take at least as long as the attempt.
- Fill the error log the same day: section, topic, and miss type (concept, silly, time, or misread).
- Next session, repair only logged items. Then pick another year from the decade list.
