CBSE Class 10 is conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and covers subject-wise board papers such as Mathematics (Standard and Basic), Science, Social Science, English and Hindi (Course A and B). This page summarises the CBSE Class 10 exam pattern, marking scheme and syllabus as a study snapshot for previous year question practice. Confirm eligibility, dates and marking in the latest official notification on cbse.gov.in.

Official CBSE documents win

Pattern and syllabus notes below are a study snapshot for PYQ practice. Always cross-check the latest curriculum, sample question papers, and circulars on cbse.gov.in before you finalise typology, marks, or deleted-chapter assumptions.

Pattern snapshot

CBSE Class 10 uses subject-wise board theory papers plus internal assessment components as notified. Exact marks, question typology, and duration follow the academic year’s curriculum and sample question papers (SQPs).

Do not treat a single older year’s section counts as permanent law. Competency-based items and typology can change.

Exact mark splits and typology live in CBSE SQPs and marking schemes. Prefer official schemes from CBSE or your school over coaching keys.

Marking mindset for PYQ practice

  1. Self-mark presentation: Incomplete steps count as a miss type, not a pass.
  2. Languages: Score format compliance (word limit, layout) separately from content.
  3. Social Science / Science long answers: Train demand-word coverage (distinguish, justify, explain).

Detailed syllabus bullets (for mapping PYQ misses)

Languages

  • Reading comprehension skills as tested
  • Writing formats listed in the current SQP
  • Grammar units as per curriculum
  • Literature lessons / poems as prescribed for your language code

Mathematics

  • Number systems, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, mensuration, statistics, probability as listed in the live curriculum
  • Internal choices and typology as per SQP
  • Step-marking expectations from official marking schemes

Science

  • Chemical substances / world of living / natural phenomena / effects of current / natural resources style units as listed for the year
  • Practical / internal components as notified
  • Diagram and experiment-based question flavours as tested

Social Science

  • India and the contemporary world; contemporary India; democratic politics; understanding economic development units as listed
  • Map work as notified
  • Project / internal components as notified

When you log a miss, write the exact curriculum unit name, not a shorthand you made up.

Eligibility / candidature snapshot

  • Regular / private / patrachar pathways as per CBSE examination bye-laws and school registration
  • Subject combinations locked through the school as per CBSE rules
  • Pass criteria and compartment rules as notified for that year

Candidature rules are administrative. Confirm with your school and CBSE circulars.

Portal caveat

CBSE may publish archives, SQPs, and curriculum files under different subdomains or academic site sections over time. Start from cbse.gov.in and follow official links. Avoid third-party “paper banks” that scrape without clear official sourcing.

  1. Take one recent full paper per major subject under realistic timing (official archive copy).
  2. Map every miss to a curriculum unit / NCERT chapter.
  3. Study that unit from NCERT (examples + in-text questions).
  4. Re-solve only those PYQs before the next full paper.
  5. Update your error log with presentation faults as first-class misses.
  6. Once per term, purge any logged topics deleted in the latest curriculum PDF.

Syllabus-change drill (when a new curriculum / SQP drops)

StepAction
1Diff last year’s curriculum units against this year’s
2Mark deleted topics as “archive only” in your PYQ folders
3Align practice mix to the new SQP typology
4Rebuild chapter Pareto lists without deleted units

Brochure caution

Do not rely on undated coaching PDFs for marks, typology, or deleted chapters. Screenshot or bookmark the current curriculum and SQP. If an older PYQ’s structure disagrees with the latest SQP, still use it for skill practice, but do not treat its design as the live exam. Prefer official CBSE papers and schemes over pirated packs when they conflict.
