For IBPS PO, IBPS Clerk, SBI PO and SBI Clerk, use previous year papers to train all three Prelims sections (English, quantitative aptitude and reasoning) against their own sectional timers, because missing one sectional cut-off fails the stage. Most bank papers are memory-based, so use them for pattern and question types, then add Mains, banking awareness and descriptive practice over a six-week plan.
Cut-off maths
Clearing overall but missing a sectional cut-off still fails the stage. Train every section on previous year papers, not only your favourite one.
IBPS PO, IBPS Clerk, SBI PO and SBI Clerk share one skill set: English, quantitative aptitude and reasoning under tight sectional timers, then a longer Mains with general and banking awareness. The PYQ problem in banking is different from SSC or JEE. The conducting bodies rarely publish full question papers, so what you practise is mostly memory-based, and the puzzle and DI style moves every year. This guide shows you how to use those papers well, which exam each hub covers, and a plan that works for PO and Clerk candidates alike.
Pattern snapshot
| Prelims (all four exams) | IBPS PO / SBI PO Mains | IBPS Clerk / SBI Clerk Mains | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sections | English, Quant (Numerical Ability for Clerk), Reasoning | Reasoning (with computer aptitude in some years), Quant/DI, English, General/Economy/Banking Awareness | Reasoning and computer, Quant, English, General/Financial Awareness |
| Timing | 60 minutes total with a separate timer for each section, 20 minutes each in recent cycles | Longer objective paper with sectional timers | Longer objective paper with sectional timers |
| Marking | Usually +1 / −0.25 | Negative marking applies, as per the notice | Negative marking applies, as per the notice |
| Extra | Sectional and overall cut-offs | Descriptive paper (letter and essay), then interview; SBI PO adds further Phase III tests | Local or official language test where notified |
Question counts per section have been revised in recent IBPS and SBI cycles, so do not copy a number from an old paper into your timer plan. Check the pattern pages for IBPS PO, IBPS Clerk, SBI PO and SBI Clerk, then confirm against the notice on ibps.in or the SBI careers page.
Memory-based papers: what that means for you
After each shift, coaching teams reconstruct questions from candidates’ recall. These sets are useful but imperfect:
- The topic mix and puzzle types are reliable. Many candidates remember “a floor-and-flat puzzle with eight people” or “a caselet on two shops”.
- Exact numbers and options may be off. A DI table can be slightly wrong, which is why some answers in memory-based sets do not work out. If a question has no correct option, move on; do not lose an hour.
- Different providers give different versions. Use one consistent source per year and note it in your log.

What bank PYQs tell you
- Reasoning is puzzles and seating arrangement first. Floor puzzles, linear and circular seating, box and scheduling puzzles take the largest share. Inequality, syllogism, blood relations, direction and coding fill the rest. Mains puzzles add more variables and conditional cases.
- Quant is DI plus arithmetic. Table, bar, pie, line and caselet DI appear in every recent paper, along with arithmetic word problems, simplification or approximation, number series and quadratic equations. Recent papers have mixed arithmetic into DI sets and added missing-data and “quantity I vs quantity II” comparisons.
- English is RC plus short verbal items. Reading comprehension, cloze test, error detection, fillers, para jumbles and word swap or column-matching types recur. The exact item types change from year to year, which is why recent papers matter.
- Mains GA is banking and economy heavy. RBI policy, banking terms, government schemes, financial institutions and current affairs of the months before the exam.
Prelims: attempt blueprint
| Section | First pass | Kill criteria | Second pass |
|---|---|---|---|
| English | Grammar and vocabulary items you can finish clean | Drop an opaque RC after one careful read | Return only to marked inference questions |
| Quant / Numerical | Simplification, series, quadratic and high-confidence arithmetic | Park lengthy DI until accuracy is banked | Return to marked medium DI |
| Reasoning | Inequality, syllogism, coding and friendly puzzles | Abandon a puzzle if structure is unclear in 2–3 minutes | Deep-solve only chosen sets |
With 20 minutes per section and no carry-over, choosing which puzzle or DI set to skip is the most important skill. Practise the choice itself: open each set, decide in 30 seconds, and log whether your choice was right.
Mains and descriptive
- Keep Prelims and Mains logs separate. Prelims speed habits do not equal Mains selection skill.
- Sit Mains papers of your target exam. SBI and IBPS Mains differ in puzzle density and DI style.
- Build a GA list from PYQ themes. Note which banking and economy topics questions actually asked, then revise those from RBI and government releases rather than reading every circular.
- PO descriptive: practise a formal letter and an essay against the notified timer, typed on a keyboard. Use structure: a clear opening, two or three points with a specific example, and a short conclusion.
A worked error-log entry
| Paper | Section | Topic | What happened | Miss type | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| IBPS PO Prelims, recent memory-based | Reasoning | Floor and flat puzzle | Spent 7 minutes; never fixed the base condition | Selection | Rule: if no fixed position after two reads, skip |
| SBI Clerk Prelims, recent memory-based | Quant | Caselet DI | Misread “of the remaining” as “of the total” | Misread | Underline every base in caselets before calculating |
| SBI PO Mains, recent | GA | Monetary policy tools | Confused SDF and MSF | Concept | One-page note on the RBI liquidity tools; re-test in a week |
6-week block
| Weeks | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1–2 | Two recent Prelims papers per week (mix IBPS and SBI); daily one sectional drill; logs started |
| 3 | Two Prelims papers; puzzle and DI selection drills from logged types |
| 4 | One Mains paper of your target exam; GA theme list from PYQs; one descriptive set (PO) |
| 5 | One Mains paper and one Prelims paper; repairs from both logs |
| 6 | Re-attempt the hardest Prelims and Mains papers; one more descriptive set; freeze new sources |
Common mistakes
- Training only your strongest section. A sectional cut-off can end your attempt even when your total clears.
- Solving every puzzle you open. In 20 minutes, one stubborn puzzle can cost you five easy questions.
- Treating memory-based answers as official. If an answer cannot be worked out, the set may be wrong.
- Leaving descriptive practice to the last week. Typing speed and structure take time to build.

FAQ
How should I use IBPS and SBI previous year papers?
Train Prelims for sectional cut-offs with daily sectional drills and one full timed paper a week, using recent memory-based papers for the current puzzle and DI style. Keep Mains papers separate for denser puzzles, caselet DI, banking awareness and, for PO, descriptive writing.
Can IBPS PYQs replace SBI practice?
Not fully. Sections and topics overlap, but difficulty, puzzle density and the Mains structure differ between IBPS and SBI, and between PO and Clerk. Use both for Prelims practice, and keep exam-specific Mains papers for your final weeks.
Are bank exam previous year papers official?
Mostly not. IBPS and SBI rarely release full question papers, so most bank PYQs available online are memory-based reconstructions put together from candidates’ recall after each shift. Use them to understand question types and difficulty, not as exact copies of the paper.
How many years of bank PYQs are useful?
For Prelims, the last two or three years matter most, because puzzle and DI styles shift quickly. Older papers are still useful for arithmetic, inequality, syllogism and grammar drills. For Mains, focus on the latest two cycles of your target exam.
When should I start the PO descriptive paper?
Start once your objective accuracy is stable, usually a few weeks before Mains. Write one letter and one essay a week against the notified timer, typed on a keyboard, using recent banking and economy themes as topics.
