GATE ME (Mechanical Engineering) has General Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics and three core sections: Applied Mechanics and Design; Fluid and Thermal Sciences; and Materials, Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering. This page gives the exam pattern, the marks each subject carried in every official paper from 2021 to 2026, and how the mix of question types has moved.

GATE 2027: syllabus revised

IIT Madras, which runs GATE 2027, has revised the syllabus for every paper for the first time in about five years. The exam is scheduled for 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027. Subject-wise marks weightage

Marks per subject in the official GATE ME papers, tagged question by question against the official answer keys (set 1 where there were two). The last column is the average over all eleven papers from 2016 to 2026.

Engineering Mathematics was exactly 13 marks in every paper from 2016 to 2026. The three core sections split the rest almost evenly, at about 23 to 25 marks each on average. Mechanics of Materials and Fluid Mechanics are the biggest single subjects at about 8 marks; Casting, Forming and Joining swings the most, from 2 marks in 2023 to 11 in 2025.

Question types by year

YearMCQMSQNAT
202138027
202235624
202332825
202439224
202538126
202645020

ME uses almost no MSQs: at most 8 in a year, and none in 2026. NATs make up 20 to 27 questions a year, so numerical accuracy matters more than option elimination.

How to use this weightage

  1. Start with the subjects at the top of the average column. They carry the most marks every year, so they decide your score.
  2. Do not drop a low-weight subject completely. Small subjects are usually 1-mark questions that take a minute once you know the basics.
  3. Practise each subject from the topic-wise PYQs, then sit full papers from the GATE ME hub under the 3-hour limit.
  4. Check the revised GATE 2027 syllabus PDF before you finish a subject, in case a topic was added.
