CUET is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and covers Language, Domain subjects and General Test. This page summarises the CUET exam pattern, marking scheme and syllabus as a study snapshot for previous year question practice. Confirm eligibility, dates and marking in the latest official notification on cuet.nta.nic.in.

Official bulletin wins

Pattern and syllabus notes below are a study snapshot for PYQ practice. Always cross-check the latest information bulletin on cuet.nta.nic.in before you finalise subjects, eligibility, fees, or marking assumptions.

Pattern snapshot

CUET (UG) is a computer-based test with Language papers, Domain subject papers, and an optional General Test. Exact duration, question counts, and which sections you must sit depend on the year’s bulletin and your target programmes.

SectionFocusNotes for PYQ mapping
LanguageReading, vocabulary, grammar flavour as testedTag misses as RC vs vocab/grammar
Domain subject(s)Class 12 aligned topics per subject PDFOne chapter map per registered domain
General TestNumerical, logical, GK / current affairs as notifiedRequired only when programmes need it

Always download the official subject syllabus PDFs for the year you are targeting. Do not invent a subject mix from coaching lists.

Subject-mix orientation (check the official bulletin for the full list)

LayerWhat it coversPYQ mapping tip
LanguageChosen language paper(s)Timed full papers; weekly RC block
DomainChosen Class 12 subjectsSeparate error log per domain
General TestCross-cutting aptitude / GKSkip entirely if eligibility is confirmed without GT

If you apply to programmes with different subject rules, maintain a master eligibility sheet before you expand PYQ folders.

Marking scheme (study snapshot)

OutcomeTypical recent cyclesPrep implication
CorrectPositive marks as notifiedBank sure items first
WrongNegative marking often appliedConfidence tagging (sure / lean / guess)
UnattemptedUsually 0Strategic skip is valid

Exact marks, number of questions to attempt, and negatives vary by year and section. Confirm the current bulletin. Do not treat a coaching PDF’s marking table as authoritative.

Marking mindset for PYQ practice

  1. Language: Practise a confidence tag per RC set. After five papers, measure which tag produces most negatives.
  2. Domain: Train “NCERT-sure first” behaviour. A half-known application MCQ is often worse than a blank if negatives apply.
  3. General Test: Separate numerical drills from GK browsing. Re-timing quant under a clock is a skill of its own.

Detailed syllabus bullets (for mapping PYQ misses)

Language

  • Reading comprehension (main idea, detail, inference, tone as tested)
  • Vocabulary in context
  • Grammar and usage flavours as listed in the bulletin
  • Literary / factual passage mix as appears in PYQs

Domain subjects

  • Official domain syllabus topics for each registered subject (download subject PDFs)
  • Theory + application as mixed in PYQs
  • Class 12 NCERT-aligned chapters unless the bulletin states otherwise
  • Newly emphasised topics in the latest PDF: flag them for targeted PYQ hunting once they appear

General Test

  • General knowledge and current affairs as scoped in the bulletin
  • Numerical ability
  • Logical and analytical reasoning
  • Quantitative reasoning flavours as tested

When you log a miss, write the exact syllabus bullet from the official PDF, not a shorthand you made up. That way your revision list matches what the paper can actually ask.

Eligibility snapshot

  • Class 12 (or equivalent) requirements as per NTA bulletin and university rules
  • Age, attempts, and subject combinations as notified for that year
  • Programme-specific CUET subject requirements published by universities
  • Reservation and domicile rules as per participating institutions

Eligibility can change by year and by university. Treat this as orientation only.

Who runs it and how often

  • Exam: Common University Entrance Test (UG)
  • Conducted by: National Testing Agency (NTA)
  • Typical frequency: Once a year (as notified)
  • Category: University entrance / government-administered
  • Official site: cuet.nta.nic.in

Portal caveat

NTA may host CUET materials under the named portal for that cycle. An old bookmark may redirect. For syllabus PDFs, admit cards, and keys, use the URL in the current year’s advertisement and information bulletin.

  1. Take one recent Language paper and one Domain paper under realistic timing (registered subjects only).
  2. Map every miss to a syllabus bullet from the official PDF.
  3. Study that bullet from NCERT or your primary resource.
  4. Re-solve only those PYQs before the next full paper.
  5. Update your error log with the syllabus tag so weak areas compound correctly.
  6. Once per month, purge any logged topics that the latest bulletin has removed.

Syllabus-change drill (when a new bulletin drops)

StepAction
1Diff last year’s subject PDFs against this year’s (chapter headings)
2Mark deleted topics as “archive only” in your PYQ folders
3Mark new inserts as “watch for appearance in newest papers”
4Rebuild Domain Pareto lists without deleted chapters
5Re-check university programme subject matrices

Brochure caution

Do not rely on undated coaching PDFs for duration, number of questions, or negative marking. Screenshot or bookmark the current information bulletin. If a PYQ set disagrees with the latest pattern, still use it for skill practice, but do not treat its structure as the live exam. Prefer official keys from NTA over memory-based shift discussions when they conflict.
